Permanent Pothole Repairs, Done Properly

Potholes aren't just an eyesore — they're a serious liability. A single unrepaired pothole can damage vehicles, cause injuries, and expose your business to costly compensation claims. At M Calladine Groundworks, we don't do temporary fixes.

Every repair we carry out is cut, cleaned and filled properly using hot or cold lay tarmac, compacted to a professional finish that blends with the surrounding surface and lasts for years — not weeks.

We work across all types of surfaces and locations: car parks, forecourts, private roads, industrial estates, driveways and footpaths. No job is too small or too large, and we always aim to get to you fast.

With over 15 years of experience across the West Midlands, you can trust that the job will be done right — first time.

The Real Cost of Ignoring Potholes

Vehicle Damage Claims

If a vehicle is damaged by a pothole on your property, you could be held liable. Business owners and landlords have a legal duty to keep surfaces in a safe condition. A repair costs a fraction of a compensation claim — and the legal fees that come with it.

🛑

Injury & Slip Hazards

Potholes fill with water and become invisible trip hazards, especially at night or in poor weather. A customer, member of staff or delivery driver could easily twist an ankle or take a serious fall. As a property owner, you carry that responsibility.

📈

Potholes Get Worse Fast

Water gets into the cracks, freezes, expands and breaks the surface apart. What starts as a small dip can become a large, deep pothole within a single winter. The longer you leave it, the bigger the repair bill — and the greater the risk to people and vehicles.

🚫

Business Reputation

A pothole-ridden car park or forecourt gives customers a poor first impression. For forecourts, retail parks and business premises, the condition of your surface reflects the quality of your business. A clean, well-maintained surface says you care about your site.

💰

Compound Costs

Delaying a repair rarely saves money. Surface damage spreads, subsidence worsens, and drainage problems develop. A small pothole repair today could prevent the need for full resurfacing next year — saving you thousands of pounds.

🔥

Emergency Situations

Some potholes develop quickly and become dangerous overnight — particularly after heavy rainfall or a hard frost. That's why we operate a 24/7 emergency callout service. If you have a pothole that can't wait, call us and we'll be there.

How We Repair Potholes

01

Survey & Assessment

We start by assessing the pothole — its depth, width, the condition of the surrounding surface, and whether there are any drainage or subsidence issues underneath. This tells us the right repair method to use and ensures a long-lasting result rather than a quick fix that fails in a few months.

02

Cut & Prepare

Unlike a simple "throw and go" patch, we cut the edges of the pothole into a clean square or rectangle using a disc cutter. This gives the repair solid, stable edges to bond to. Any loose or crumbling material is removed and the base is cleared of debris and water.

03

Prime the Surface

Before any tarmac goes in, we apply a tack coat — a bitumen-based primer that creates a strong bond between the existing surface and the new material. This step is often skipped by cheaper operators, and it's one of the main reasons repairs fail prematurely. We don't skip it.

04

Fill with Tarmac

We fill the repair with high-quality tarmac — either hot lay for larger areas or cold lay for smaller patches. The material is placed in layers where needed to build up depth, ensuring even compaction throughout the repair rather than a single thick layer that can crack.

05

Compact & Finish

The tarmac is compacted using a roller or plate compactor to achieve a solid, even finish that sits flush with the surrounding surface. We take care to blend the repair into the existing tarmac so the result looks as neat as possible, not just functional.

06

Clean Up & Sign Off

We leave the site clean and tidy, remove any cones or barriers, and walk you through the completed repair. The surface is ready to use almost immediately. We're happy to advise on any other areas of concern while we're on site — at no extra charge.

Pothole Repair FAQs

A properly carried out pothole repair — where the area is cut, primed and filled with quality tarmac then properly compacted — should last many years. The key difference between a lasting repair and one that fails quickly is preparation. We never skip the cutting and priming stages, which is why our repairs hold up long-term.
For standard repairs we typically aim to be with you within 24–48 hours of your enquiry. For emergency situations — where a pothole poses an immediate danger to vehicles or people — we operate a 24/7 callout service and will aim to attend as quickly as possible. Call us directly on 01623 339827 for urgent jobs.
The cost depends on the size and depth of the pothole, how many need repairing, and the location. We always provide a free, no-obligation quote before any work begins — there are no hidden charges. For multiple potholes on the same site, we can often offer a better rate. Get in touch for a quote specific to your job.
In most cases, yes. Cold lay tarmac can be applied in damp conditions, making it suitable for urgent repairs in wet weather. For best results with hot lay tarmac, dry conditions are preferable. We will always advise you on the most suitable approach for the conditions and will never carry out a repair that won't last just to get the job done quickly.
We always aim to blend repairs into the existing surface as neatly as possible. Fresh tarmac is naturally darker than weathered tarmac, so there will often be a slight colour difference initially — this fades over time as the new material weathers. We cut clean edges which gives a much neater result than simply filling over the top of a pothole.
As a property or business owner, you have a duty of care to ensure your premises are reasonably safe. If someone is injured — or a vehicle is damaged — due to a pothole on land you own or manage, you could face a compensation claim. The Occupiers Liability Act places responsibility on the occupier to maintain safe surfaces. Getting potholes repaired promptly is the most straightforward way to protect yourself.
Cold lay tarmac repairs can usually be driven on almost immediately. Hot lay tarmac repairs typically need around 30–60 minutes to cool and harden before vehicle use, though this varies depending on weather conditions. We will always let you know the specific waiting time for your repair before we leave the site.
